Challenging refurbishment with insulated lightning protection system
During the refurbishment of Knappschaftskrankenhaus hospital in Bottrop, the use of the insulated OBO isCon® arrestor allows the fulfilment of particular requirements. The room intercom to call nurses, electrically-operated roller shutters and the arrestor system of the lightning protection system are routed along the external facade – countless crossings are the result. In addition, during refurbishment, the whole facade will be covered with a modern external facade.
The refurbishment works on Knappschaftskrankenhaus hospital in Bottrop, erected in 1931, were begun at the end of 2009 and are expected to be completed in April 2012. During the building work, the building will not only receive complete cladding and heat insulation on the external facade, new windows and electrical roller shutters, but also the Class 2 lightning protection system will be brought right up to the current requirements of the lightning protection standard DIN EN 62305.
The company Bätza Köster, from Essen, was included in the planning of the renovation of the lightning protection system from the very beginning. This meant that the electrical installations on the external facade could be taken into account in the lightning protection planning at an early stage.
A special feature of Knappschaftskrankenhaus is the intercom system, newly routed along the external facade, as well as the control of the new, electrically operated roller shutters. This creates numerous crossovers with the lightning protection systems, in which the separation distance is not maintained. Should lightning strike the lightning protection system, conventional non-insulated routing of the arrestors along the building facade would couple lightning currents into the building.
Only the use of an insulated arrestor maintains the necessary separation spacing in the area of the crossovers, meeting the requirements of the standard and running the lightning current safely into the earth.
When choosing the insulated arrestor, Bätza Köster chose the isCon® arrestor from OBO Bettermann. The reason for this was some of the advantages which make working with the isCon® arrestor particularly simple in practice.
For example, work on the construction site is simplified considerably through the delivery of the isCon® arrestor on disposable cable drums. This means that the cable can be cut flexibly and economically on-site. The connection elements are also mounted automatically. This means that there is no need to order pre-terminated arrestors of fixed lengths, thus minimising the quantity of expensive waste as well as the number of additional orders placed. Planning is also simplified, as not every cable must be planned exactly to the right centimetre, meaning that changes and deviations can be dealt with flexibly in practice.
When the project has been completed, a total of 400 metres of isCon® arrestor will have been correctly installed.
